HexGL
A futuristic anti-gravity racer built in WebGL. You pilot a hovering ship through neon canyons at speeds that punish every late correction.
HexGL is Thibaut Despoulain's open-source racing game, written as a showcase for what WebGL could do in a browser and still one of the better looking things running without a plugin. The ship hovers, there is no traction model to lean on, and steering is about bleeding speed into a turn early rather than yanking the nose around in it.
Tracks are narrow and fast, and the walls take your shield down rather than stopping you outright, so a clean lap matters more than an aggressive one. It is demanding on graphics hardware; the game ships with quality presets and dropping to the low setting is the difference between playable and not on a school Chromebook.
Controls
Arrow keys or WASD to steer, shift to boost, space to brake
Tips
- Set the graphics preset to low before your first race. The default is tuned for a desktop GPU and a stutter at this speed is a crash.
- Brake before the turn, not in it. The ship has no grip to recover with once you are already sliding.
- Shield is your real lap timer. Scraping walls costs more over a full race than the two seconds a tight line saves.
