Super Mario 63
A fan-made 2D remake of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, with the FLUDD water pack, sixty-four stars and a level editor.
Runouw spent years building Super Mario 63 and released it in 2009. It is a genuinely large game: a 2D reinterpretation of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine that folds in a hub world, sixty-four stars, boss fights and the FLUDD water pack from Sunshine as a core movement tool.
The FLUDD is what makes it more than a tribute. Hover, rocket and turbo nozzles each change platforming in a different way, and the level design is built around swapping between them mid-air. There is also a level editor that people used for years afterward. For a free Flash game made by one person, the scope is absurd.
Controls
Arrow keys or WASD to move, Space or Z to jump, X or Shift for FLUDD
Tips
- Swap FLUDD nozzles mid-jump. Hover extends a jump, rocket restarts it, and most hard gaps need both.
- Explore the hub. Several stars are hidden there rather than inside the painting levels.
- Wall jumps and long jumps from the 3D games are all present, so the movement tricks you know still work.
