Super Mario Flash
Classic Mario platforming with a built-in level editor, which is what most people actually came for.
Super Mario Flash from 2007 rebuilds the Super Mario World toolkit in a browser: running, jumping, stomping, fire flowers, pipes and blocks, all behaving close enough to the real thing to feel right.
The lasting part is the editor. It ships with a full level designer and a code system for sharing creations, and for several years that was one of the only ways to build and share Mario levels at all, long before Nintendo made Mario Maker. The included levels are fine; the community levels are the reason people remember it.
Controls
Arrow keys to move, Space or A to jump, S to run and shoot
Tips
- Hold the run key while jumping. The jump arc is noticeably longer, exactly as in the games it copies.
- The level editor is the main attraction, so try building before you finish the bundled levels.
- Level codes are long strings you can paste back in, which is how levels were shared before the editor had hosting.
